ABOUT SARA

Sara Fox's career as a historical fiction writer began with a promise to her late parents to write the story of their 200-year-old Birmingham based family business. This led her to unearth tales more captivating than she could have imagined. As self-appointed listener, curator and healer of the many stories that were passed down through generations, Sara’s ability to record without judgement and wrap into a fictionalised retelling makes her the perfect conduit for this unique and powerful family saga. A former complementary health practitioner offering grief counselling, homeopathy, and even soul-midwifery to people and animals, Sara brings a unique combination of interests, knowledge and perspective to her writing. As a "retired" Army wife, Sara’s three decades of association with the armed forces influenced her wish to include Birmingham's Gun Quarter in her telling of the story. It also exposed her to a life surrounded by women who became the linchpin of their families. Sara’s ties to family storytelling can also be traced to her great grandmother Elizabeth Archer from Hanbury, Worcestershire. Godfrey Baseley, a family friend, often visited and used Elizabeth’s maiden name and her family to form a basis for Radio 4’s longest running drama, The Archers. When not penning historical tales, Sara can be found savouring beautiful teas, great coffee, a glass of fine wine or a cheeky tot of Irish whiskey. Sara relishes a quiet life with her husband, punctuated by the antics of their crazy Border Collie, Flossie, and as dictated by their sassy cat, Teasel.

A woman with shoulder length brown hair, blue eyes. wearing a blue shirt and orange scarf.
A Victorian man, Matthew Seller sits in an old chair with his arm on a victorian desk. He has grey hair and whiskers, wearing a heavy woollen coat, waistcoat, striped trousers and a pocketwatch.

Behind The Story

The Seller & Son Trilogy is based on a true story. Read about the moment Sara knew that the story of her grandfathers and Birmingham's industrial heritage had to be written.

A LEGACY FORGED

Based on true historical events, in 1822, ten-year-old Matthew Seller escapes an abusive father and a punishingly hard life. The new canal system leads him to Birmingham. It’s in this great city that Matthew sparks a legacy that burns through the next five generations.

In a moving tale of ‘found family’, A Legacy Forged explores complex relationships between fathers and sons, and the quiet strength of the women whose wisdom and courage shape their family’s fortunes.

This epic family saga is a powerful testament to the ordinary people who made Birmingham the Workshop of the World.

“The streets were thronged with working people. The hum of labour resounded from every house.”

This is no stiff stodgy story, for it is primarily about the characters and the challenges in their extraordinary lives.

Perfect for fans of Ken Follett and Edward Rutherfurd. I can't wait to continue this series.

Set in a time of seismic historical events like the Industrial Revolution, women's suffrage, the Crimean War,, the Irish Famine and fight for independence,, all of which impact the characters in the book, the story is, at its heart of one familial devotion among a few cobbled streets and farms.
